Well, for now, that's the only way to get a pet. Pet shops are in the works, as this is still a site in progress.
The process is mainly: Go to the top, click Pets, click Genus Codex, download the PSD file for the pet you like, and play around with its colourings. Save the result as a PNG file.
Then you use a talisman matching your new pet's rarity by going to the top menu again, click Pets, click Submit Custom and follow the instructions there.
Talismans are available in Market, then Item Shop.
I've sent you an Amber Talisman which you can use for a pet of Common rarity. Enjoy
Baby Pets for your Avatar can be found in Market, the FA Shops, then Magical Menagerie.
We have a place called Pet Sales: https://faenaria.com/forum.php?id=28 - doesn't have much business yet.
Since all the pets are customs, there aren't really any unwanted pets.
i didn't realise the site was so new. the copyright of 2013 gave me rather different expectations.

i read the newbie guide, i read the breeding guide, i read the pet guide. i know where pets come from and i mostly get how breeding works. customs are neat and i'm sure i'll get into those once i'm into the site more.
what i can't find is any kind of pet market or pound or any way of actually getting a pet. where do people sell their pet's offspring? where do people sell unwanted pets? how do i buy pets?

while i'm here, i have some questions about customs and breeding. i've read the rules and i'm still confused.
i get that we draw our own breeding results, and staff decide what we draw, but what about genes?
what are the genes? just the general design? do i submit the offspring of a breeding the same way i would any other custom - colour the base and upload the file?
and how different do customs have to be? could i submit, for example, a recolour of the dragonfruit pet above? could i submit an exact clone of it?
i've done art rpgs on forums with breeding so this is kind of a familiar system, i just want to make sure i'm not assuming more freedom than we have

First of all, WELCOME! 
Glad to see a new user already so into the pets! Secondly, yes, we've been around since 2013, but the site has gone through a few changes (complete overhauls actually) to get to where we are. We finally have a good path going, so we're trying our best to get things where we want them. Meaning, we're looking to add shop pets, make breeding automated, and some other huge things we're waiting for a programmer to work out for us. So while things are still "in the works" we hope that us being around for many years shows how dedicated we are to making the site great!
So on to your last questions that flederfalle didn't answer yet:
Genes are the markings you have on the parents. So for instance, your dragonfruit Ryu, it has the speckles on the belly, that would be a gene, and could be passed to that pets offspring. If neither parent has that gene/marking then the baby can't have it UNLESS you use the item in the shop to add a gene, then it can. ^^
As for submitting the offspring, no, there is a forum that you would need to post a form in *goes to get link* here. That way we can attach the offspring to the parents.
Since you colored that pet, if you wanted to just recolor it and submit, that's your choice. There really isn't a reason to have an exact clone, but that is also your choice, as long as you colored it. If someone else colors the pet, then it would be up to them if they would be OK with you recoloring or uploading more than one of what they colored for you. ^^ ETA: Cloned pets are NOT allowed.
