i want to make one of the avatars i designed for the contest, but i don't want to lock myself into always having to have one.
can i delete my avatar and have it blank again, or will i be stuck?

You will always be able to just display no avatar, as long as you don't choose one or, after displaying one, choosing to display none.
Top menu => Avatar => Display Avatar
I don't know if it's possible to delete all your avatars. And I certainly won't try that out

choosing to display none is probably a better option, anyway.
update: once you have an avatar you are stuck with it. there's a "select avatar" drop-down when you post and there's no option for "none".

However, you'd have to go back and change every post to make it so on every post... it just changes posts from then on.
