When my son was very small he got an awful gift for Christmas. It made him cry. I don't know what the person was thinking, but it lead us to come up with the questions on 'how to judge a gift'
So now whenever we get gifts, doesn't matter what the gift is, we always ask these three questions to see if it is a good one. If the answer is two NO and one YES then it is a good gift.

1) Did you deserve the gift?
2) Did you earn the gift?
3) Was the gift given in love?

So from that time to this I have never received a bad gift from anyone. Not even the last second thrift store socks bought second hand. It was a good lesson for both I and my son to learn.
